Halloween crafts and keepsakes with a newborn: what you can actually make in week six
Scoutalist is reader-supported. If you buy through a link on this page we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we recommend, and several options on our pages earn us nothing. Full disclosure.
Pick one keepsake and one picture. A footprint ghost or a handprint pumpkin takes ten minutes with baby-safe paint and a sheet of cardstock. The picture is the baby in or next to the pumpkin, in daylight, right after a feed. Everything else is extra credit.
A new mom told us what would make a page like this worth her time: “photos of crafts and keepsakes to do.” Photos are coming. The crafts are below, and every one passes the same test: you can finish it in ten minutes, one-handed, on no sleep.
The footprint ghost
Paint the sole of the foot white (non-toxic, washable), press it onto black or orange cardstock, heel at the top. Two dots for eyes once it dries. Three feet in a row is a family of ghosts. Works from day one; the foot doesn’t have to cooperate the way a hand does.
The handprint pumpkin
Orange paint on the palm, press, let it dry, draw a green stem at the wrist end. This one waits till the fist opens, usually two to three months. If you’ve got a newborn, do the foot ghost now and the hand pumpkin next year.
Ink-free versions
If paint on skin bothers you, ink-free handprint kits press the hand onto a coated sheet that develops the print; nothing touches the baby. They cost more and the print comes out cleaner. Either way, the hand stays out of the mouth till it’s wiped.
The pumpkin picture
One dad’s first Halloween idea was to carve a pumpkin “for her to fit in.” It’s a great picture and a short one. Carve the top wide, scoop it completely clean, line the inside with a folded towel, dress the baby warm (fleece, not the thin costume), and keep a hand on them the whole time. Daylight, right after a feed. Thirty seconds, not a seat.
Pumpkin too small? The baby next to it in the costume hat is the same picture, and if the whole family’s dressed up, that’s the family photo.
The first-Halloween box
A plain box with the year on it. The footprint goes in. So does the hat, the hospital bracelet if it’s still around, and a printed copy of the picture. Next year the handprint goes in. This is the one that matters in ten years.
What to skip this year
Anything with glitter (it goes everywhere, including eyes). Anything that needs the baby to hold something. Anything with small parts the AAP would call a choking hazard: googly eyes, pom-poms, buttons. And anything that takes more than ten minutes, because you don’t have ten minutes.

Baby-safe, washable, non-toxic paint (or an ink-free handprint kit)
Look for 'non-toxic' and 'washable' on the label. Ink-free kits press the hand onto a coated sheet so nothing touches skin at all.

A first-Halloween keepsake box
Somewhere the footprint, the hospital bracelet, and the hat go. Plain is better; you'll label it.

A pumpkin big enough to sit a baby in
For the picture. Carve wide, scoop clean, towel inside, hand on the baby.

Questions parents ask
Is paint safe on a newborn's skin?
Only paint labeled non-toxic and washable, and wipe it off right after. If you'd rather not, ink-free kits give you a print with nothing touching skin. Keep it away from the mouth and keep the hand out of the mouth till it's clean.
The baby's three weeks old. Too early?
A footprint works at any age. A handprint usually waits till the fist opens, around two to three months. Do the foot now.
What if we have no time at all?
Take the picture. One picture, in the pumpkin or next to it, in daylight. That's the keepsake.
